Specialist Learning – PE and School Sport

Great to see some of our students having a go at the Week 1 home learning task. Below are some photos of some superstars completing the “Beanbag Toss” and the fitness activity.

Week 7 Target Games

Over the next two weeks in P.E, the year 3-7 students are focusing on target games and teamwork. Students were asked to form groups of 4 and then design their very own Mini Golf hole. They had to work together and through trial and error, they came up with a hole for everyone to have a go at.

Skills shown during this task included:

Apply critical and creative thinking processes in order to generate and assess solutions to movement challenges

Adopt inclusive practices when participating in physical activities

Combine elements of effort, space, time, objects and people when performing movement sequences

Participate positively in groups and teams by encouraging others and negotiating roles and responsibilities

SAPSASA NETBALL

Thursday the 27th of June, our team of SAPSASA Netball girls competed in a round robin knockout competition at Hallet Cove East. Three teams competed on the day, playing each other once, with the team with the most wins going through to the next round.

The first game we competed against Hallet Cove East. We had a strong start and lead 13-7 at half time. The girls showed some brilliant team work and came away with a big win, 25-14.

With very little break, the girls got back on the court for their second game against Nativity. It was a tough and close game. Half time score was 7-4 our way. The final whistle sounded, and our girls were exhausted, but they had come away with the win! The final score was 17-13! Meaning that our team moves onto the next round of games.

What a fantastic effort from all our SAPSASA Girls! A huge thankyou to Fiona W for coaching and of course to Dean Carter for supporting/assisting coaching.

RUGBY CARNIVAL

Friday 24th May, Happy Valley hosted the Southern Districts Rugby League Carnival. A number of schools competed on the day.

The boys started off their first game with a win. The girls played the same school. For the first 5 minutes we were scared and didn’t tackle, eventually we gained confidence and started tackling. We won our first game too. Come the end of the day, the boys had won 4 games and lost one, and us girls had won 3 games and lost two. This meant that the boy’s team had made it to the Grand Final, and our girls’ team had made it to the second final. The boys had an exciting game and came away with the win. District Winners. This means our boys team will compete at State Day. The girls game was played after lunch and a number of the classes had come down to watch. Their cheering and encouragement motivated us even more and we finished with the win, meaning we had come 3rd overall.

Sinead C scored the most try’s for the girls team, and Lachie B scored the most try’s for the boys. After all the games had been played, we had a presentation for the winners and the Best Players. Bailey W and Sinead won Best Players for their teams. Bailey W had such an extraordinary day, he was individually asked to try out for the State Team for South Australia.

SPORTS DAY

They’ve finally done it. After 19 long years, Mason was crowned 2019 Sports Day Champions. The day began in windy conditions with a great warm up lead by past students Pia and Sophie. We then moved on to the championship sprints where there was a lot of very close and exciting races (and a few stacks). It was fantastic to see the support that each house showed towards their team mates.

At the conclusion of the year 7 boys race, everyone moved on to the class tabloid events. The year 3-7 students competed in the usual athletics events plus had a go at Rugby League and Volleyball. F-2 classes were exposed to AFL, Soccer, Netball, Tennis and Aerobics. There were some fantastic performances with some of the biggest highlights coming in the really grueling 800 metre event.

After lunch it was time to put into practice all the training that each relay team had done. It was a credit to all students that these events ran so smoothly. The teamwork and camaraderie on show was amazing to see. The overall result even came down to these races. There was a few really close races and some not so close ones, but in the end, everyone did a fantastic job.

I’d like to thank all the people that put in a huge effort in the preparation of the day, especially Nigel Cock who took the Thursday off to help prepare the oval and met me at 6am on the day. Also, a huge thank you to all of our ex-students that came back and helped. At the end of the day the winners of the day were announced and much to the delight of Mason and their parents, their Sports Day drought was over.
