Leadership Update #24

Dear Families,

Today sees the end to a very busy, but rewarding semester. Thank you to students, families and staff for your ongoing commitment to learning at Happy Valley Primary School.

NAIDOC Week is held from 4-11 July and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

As NAIDOC Week occurs during the holidays, we have offered a competition to our students. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is: Heal Country! And we have asked students to think about what this mean to them and to create a piece of art that represents this theme. Students registered interest and competition packs have been sent home. Entries are due by Wednesday 21 July, we look forward to seeing the finished masterpieces!

On Wednesday, our girls Rugby team joined a number of schools at West Beach Sports Park. Our team played well throughout the day, unfortunately losing by a golden point to become Runner up State Champions. Congratulations to the team, for many this was the first time to be involed in Rugby competitions.

This term’s Casual Day proceeds will go to Minton Farm Animal Rescue. Minton Farm is located at Cherry Gardens in and is a non-profit, non-government organisation run entirely on community goodwill and volunteer time. Minton Farm rescues animals in need and to date overall has rescued over 11,500 native animals. Thank you for your contributions towards this great cause!

Today we welcomed the Jam Band to our school. The Just Add Music Band is a group of passionate Adelaide musicians providing a fun, entertaining, interactive and educational children’s show. They aim to inspire students and help develop confidence and self-esteem through student engagement and interaction. Our students had a wonderful time and it was a great way to end the term.

Responding to Abuse and Neglect (RAN) Training has now been replaced by Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN-EC). This training course is now available and all volunteers must update their current mandatory notification certificate with this new training by 31 December 2021. More information will be available next term.

Thank you to all of our volunteers in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen program, we can’t do it without you! Thursday’s superstar team of regulars, volunteered with Claire Bosworth’s class. Thanks to Sharee, Caitlin, Peter, Lars, Nigel and Susie.

We appreciate the effort required to be a volunteer at a school site and thank those who are able to contribute their time!

On Sunday the 18 July we will be having a Working Bee between 10am and 12pm. The focus for this will be planting and signage in the wetlands. Please come on down if you can!

We wish everyone a happy and safe holidays and look forward to students returning refreshed and ready to learn in Term 3!

Kind regards,

Paul and Anthea

Kitchen Garden Update

Term 4 so far!

PRODUCE

The garden has been quite productive again this term, supplying much of the ingredients for the kitchen menus. This produce included broccoli, cauliflower, celery, rhubarb, lemons, lemongrass, broad beans, spring onions, coriander, oregano, thyme, parsley, silver beet, mint, carrots, nasturtium leaves & flowers and of course eggs!

LESSONS

The older students have spent some lesson time attending to the jobs that just need to be done – weeding and pulling out old crops! The big leaves from the winter crops are now decomposing in our big compost bin to make compost for our garden.

With the unusually hot days earlier this week garden lesson was inside – sketching leaves.  The effort put in by the students was evident – all the sketches were very good. They will finish them next lesson, adding labels.

The sequence of key stages in the life cycle of a plant or animal is a curriculum Science topic so it was timely to receive some silkworms and to find tadpoles in our pond. The middle primary lessons revolved around sharing their own knowledge as well as thinking up many, many more questions for us to research.

Lessons have also included planting our summer crops.

Menu for kitchen – sushi, Vietnamese rice paper rolls, vegetable gyoza, vegetable samosa, vegie croquettes.

SAKG Busy Times

Although term 3 is winter, we have been very busy in our SAKG Program!

The year 6 & 7 focused on Sustainability in our School for the first part of the term. Later in the term the year 7’s organised a Scavenger Hunt around the garden and invited Mrs. James’ class to join them. The year 7’s took on the role of guides and engaged the younger students very well.

After a very sensible question from a younger students ‘How do you know which ones are weeds?’, the year 6s took photos of weeds for all the classes to use.

The middle primary classes helped with the general running of the gardens with learning to weed, prune and prepare and improve our garden beds. The last couple of lessons the 4/5 classes have looked at worms. They have looked at them under magnifying glasses and learnt some amazing things about worms!

Mrs. Loveday’s class were very excited this week to see the tomato seedlings they planted a fortnight ago have germinated!

The seedlings we planted 3 months ago were harvested this term and used in our kitchen lessons. Sheena-Margot sourced some amazing recipes to use our produce in some exciting recipes! Dolmades using nasturtium leaves and stuffed nasturtium flowers were yummy as well as nettles tea.

SAKG Week 1

Term 3 week 1 was very busy for our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. We harvested beetroot, rosemary, cauliflower, 3 types of kale, coriander, cabbage, mint, celery, lemons, parsley and eggs from our ‘girls’.
Sheena-Margot and the enthusiastic students used the veggies to prepare yummy Kale Pakora, Rosemary Beetroot Chips, Green Spicy Coleslaw, Cauliflower Fritters and Chickpea Celery Salad.

Garden Produce

Wendy and the students have been very busy in our many gardens, weeding, mulching, harvesting and getting plots ready for winter crops.

It is always exciting when you get to harvest from your own garden, and the students have an extra sense of proud when they see what they have helped grown. All our produce gets either used in our Kitchen lessons, in the canteen or sold at our Garden Market every Thursday afternoon.

Check out some of our latest harvests.
