Welcome to Caragh Larsen – Pastoral Care Worker for 2021

We would like to thank our Pastoral Care Worker, Chris, for all of her dedicated listening and caring for our students over the last 18 months. Chris will be focusing her time at her other school in 2021 and we would like to wish her the very best for her future. We would like to extend a big welcome out to Caragh Larsen who will be our new Pastoral Care Worker. She would like to introduce herself below:

Hello Happy Valley Primary School Community.

It is such an honour to have been appointed as your new Pastoral Care Worker. It’s such a beautiful school, and I have been made to feel so welcome already. Here is a little about me.

I have lived in Adelaide for 4 years, before that I lived in England, and before that South Africa! I am a mum and I have 3 boys who are aged 9, 7 and 5. I love coffee, swimming in the sea and camping! I feel so fortunate to have been given this role and to have the opportunity to shadow Chris Oxenham for the rest of this term. I am so looking forward to getting to know you and to support you in whatever way I can.

Caragh

Sports Day – now a family free event

As a consequence of these COVID-19 restrictions, we have made the decision to make Sports Day a family free event. Governing Council have approved this decision and, although it is unfortunate and disappointing, we really appreciate your understanding and support around making this a safe and enjoyable event for our young people.

Please see the attached letter for more information.

Parent Engagement Survey

The 2020 parent engagement survey opens on Monday 7 September. The survey is for all parents of students enrolled in a South Australian public school.

The survey is an opportunity for parents to provide feedback on their school. Your feedback will help us understand:

  • what we are doing well
  • where we can improve
  • what is really important to you as a parent.

All parents and carers who have their contact details recorded with their school will receive a unique link to the survey.  The survey will be open from Monday 7 September to Friday 25 September 2020.  The survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.

If you have not received a link, please email education.parentsurvey@sa.gov.au with the name of the school your child attends, and we’ll send you the correct link.

All responses are confidential. Only collated feedback will be provided to your child’s school.

Future vision for our school

Education today is not the same as education looked like, say, 30 years ago. We need to educate our students now to ensure that the knowledge, skills and attitudes of our young people sets them up for success within their future lives. We would love to hear your thoughts and views about what the future of learning should look like at Happy Valley Primary. Please complete the following short survey to have your say:

Future Vision for HVPS parent survey

The Department for Education plan to make South Australia’s public education world-class by 2028. Here is a short video outlining their strategies:

The OECD Future of Education and Skills 2030 project has observed some innovative features of education systems that are just emerging but that may become the “new normal” in tomorrow’s education systems. Here is a short video that may be of some interest for you:

Hazel Robertson would love to hear from anyone that is interested in having more input regarding the future vision of our school. Please feel free to phone or email (hazel.robertson500@schools.sa.edu.au) her for a chat and take the time to fill in this parent survey:

COVID-19 and Term 3 planning

Welcome back to term 3.

I hope that you have had a school holiday break and that you managed to soak up some of our winter sunshine.

As I am sure that you have seen on the media, some places in Australia are, unfortunately, plagued by severe outbreaks of COVID-19. We have been very fortunate here in South Australia but I want to reassure you all that we have not become complacent at Happy Valley Primary. We still have additional cleaning happening across the school, we are encouraging regular hand washing and good hygiene practices and we are following Department guidelines regarding activities and social distancing.

If there was an outbreak close by and we had to resort to home learning, our school is now organised to do this after our preparation time at the end of term 1. Class teachers would use Seesaw / Class Dojo and email to keep in contact with families and Webex to video conference with students if we were off school for a prolonged time. Our teachers are using collaborative planning time within their teams to ensure the curriculum is well mapped out for the term.

Please help us by ensuring you update your contact / address details at the front office if they change and by keeping in close communication with your class teacher(s).  We will keep you up to date with any news from the Department of Education as we receive it.

Kind regards,

Hazel Robertson

End of Term 2 Update

Holiday break

We hope you all have a great holiday break. Whatever you have planned, we hope you relax and manage some quality time with the family. We are all looking forward to a more ‘straight forward’ term 3, full of learning and fun!

Report Cards

Mid-year reports will be sent home on Wednesday afternoon. Teachers have worked hard to write these based on the evidence of student learning gathered throughout the first semester, especially considering some students were learning at home during the COVID-19 crisis.

Please take time to read through your child’s report to recognise their achievements and discuss areas for growth. You may wish to use these conversation starters:

What is something you have achieved of which you are proud?

What are three things you did to help your classmates?

What are the three most important things you learned?

What is something that was hard for you at the start of the year but is easier now?

In what area do you feel you have improved?

What is something you taught your teacher or classmates?

Of the books you read, which was your favourite? Why?

What was the best piece of work that you did? Why do you think it is your best?

What are three describing words (adjectives) that best describe your school year so far?

Plans for 2021

Aside from Year 7 students graduating at the end of this year, if your child will not be returning to Happy Valley Primary School in 2021, please inform the front office. This will help us with our forward planning for the 2021 school year. Thank you.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

All schools are required to collect information about the numbers of students that they provide adjustments to under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and Disability Standards of Education. This data is used as the basis for national funding.

The NCCD involves the collection of;

  • the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students
  • the level of adjustment provided to students
  • student’s type of disability if known

Under the model, the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions.

If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information will be included in this year’s data collection.

If you have any questions about the data collection, please contact Hazel Robertson or Anthea Bartlett.
