Friday – Book Swap Trolley

Every Friday there will be a book trolley near the door of the Library.

This is our ‘Book Swap’ trolley where you can ‘Take A Book’ and ‘Leave A Book’.

You can leave any children’s book in ‘good’ condition and exchange it for anything on the trolley.

We ask that parent’s help the Junior Primary student’s with this if possible and I am always available to help.

Please come in and look at our ‘Parent Library’ titles that are available for you to borrow with some new ones arriving soon.

Sports Day

Sports Day 2021

What a fantastic day we had last Friday. The weather was beautiful and the oval looked a treat. We began our annual Sports Day with our whole school warm up delivered by former students Pia and Mel. We then witnessed a traditional smoking ceremony conducted by Uncle Tamaru. Smoking ceremonies are an ancient custom among Aboriginal Australians in which native plants are burnt to produce smoke and acknowledge the ancestors and pay respect to the land, waters and sea of country. The smoke is believed to have healing and cleansing properties.

Next up was the performing of the House songs and the Championship Sprints. There were some great races with some very tight finishes. Most impressive of all though was the sportsmanship shown by all of our students. At the conclusion of the sprints we were treated to an exhibition 800 metre race by Gras Amekata who is ranked top 3 in the state and is a close family friend of the Loveday’s. He made it look effortless and the crowd were in awe, even though he was in cruise control finishing with a time of 2.07 minutes.

Classes then proceeded to their tabloid events. Junior Primary were able to give AFL, Tennis, Cricket, Aerobics and Little Athletics a try. It was great to see all students getting in there and challenging themselves. A big thankyou to all of the providers from the state sporting bodies that came along and ran these sessions. Our year 3 to 7 students competed in the 100 metres, long jump, shot put, hurdles, 800 metres and netball where each child scored points for their house depending on what they scored. The resilience shown by everyone, especially in the 800 was great to see.

After lunch it was time for the relays. Well done to our House Captains who have been training their teams all term. Everything ran really smoothly because of this and we even finished ahead of schedule. The level of teamwork was on show for all to see and there were numerous very close races. The noise from the crowd and support of these teams was electrifying!

It was now time to announce who the 2021 Sports Day trophy went to. In a very close count, Shepherd were crowned champions. The scores were:

Shepherd – 3068

Mason – 2987

Chandler – 2829

Nicolle – 2560

Lastly, a huge shout out to Nigel Cock, Sam Matthews and Phil Loveday who worked tirelessly in the days leading up to Sports Day to ensure our grounds were in fantastic condition on the day. Our students that qualified now look forward to representing Happy Valley in the Southern Valley District Athletics carnival later in the year.

Leadership Update 4

Dear Families,

Next Tuesday, 9 February, is our school’s Acquaintance Night. Quality and open communications between home and school are fundamentally important and help build strong relationships and mutual understandings between family, students and teachers. These strong relationships help drive quality education for all students. We are looking forward to a successful year working together and we hope to see you during our Acquaintance Night. The booking process through School Interviews has been successful and we have seen a large portion of community responding promptly, reserving a session that meets their needs. If you have not booked a session, please do so ASAP, bookings close on Sunday 7 February at 7.00pm.

Our Governing Council AGM will be held on Monday 15 February at 7.00pm in the Library at which the Annual Report will be presented outlining the school’s achievement and progress in 2020. Happy Valley Primary School has an active and committed governing council. We meet regularly, twice a term to talk about the direction for the school. If you are interested in joining our Governing Council, forms are available from the front office to register your interest.

Our school will be having a Working Bee on Sunday 28 February, 10am – 12pm. This event will comply with COVID-19 Restrictions with social distancing and BYO tools. This working bee will focus on completing the upgrade to the wetlands and a general tidy up of our grounds and gardens.

The beginning of the year sees our classes focussing on the school values of respect, responsibility and integrity and our Code. The School Code provides the basis for all conduct when attending Happy Valley Primary School. The Code provides students with consistent expectations for all members of our community. Please see the attached code.

We have received a large number of volunteer applications for working at our school. The Department for Education requires all volunteers to complete a Working with Children Check, RAN training and an online induction. A volunteer pack with all requirements can be obtained from the front office or let your classroom teacher know you require one.

In Week 5 our Junior Primary students will be attending Water Safety Week. We will require parent volunteers to accompany classes on the bus and help at the Swimming Centre. All volunteers are required to have completed a Volunteer Application as mentioned above. If you are able to attend please contact the front office on 8381 7166 and our staff will book you into our parent volunteer roster.

It has been pleasing to see our new Receptions and new students to the school have settled in successfully and all classes have begun productively and have established routines positively.
