Eco-Leaders

Glenthorne National Park – from FB

Our Eco-Leaders have spent as much time as they can completing our wetland update. We have planted seedlings, built a fence and weeded. Thank you to Nigel Cock for watering the newly planted seedlings on the weekend. The last stage will be spreading a load of dolomite at the working bee.

Kitchen Garden Update

Term 4 so far!

PRODUCE

The garden has been quite productive again this term, supplying much of the ingredients for the kitchen menus. This produce included broccoli, cauliflower, celery, rhubarb, lemons, lemongrass, broad beans, spring onions, coriander, oregano, thyme, parsley, silver beet, mint, carrots, nasturtium leaves & flowers and of course eggs!

LESSONS

The older students have spent some lesson time attending to the jobs that just need to be done – weeding and pulling out old crops! The big leaves from the winter crops are now decomposing in our big compost bin to make compost for our garden.

With the unusually hot days earlier this week garden lesson was inside – sketching leaves.  The effort put in by the students was evident – all the sketches were very good. They will finish them next lesson, adding labels.

The sequence of key stages in the life cycle of a plant or animal is a curriculum Science topic so it was timely to receive some silkworms and to find tadpoles in our pond. The middle primary lessons revolved around sharing their own knowledge as well as thinking up many, many more questions for us to research.

Lessons have also included planting our summer crops.

Menu for kitchen – sushi, Vietnamese rice paper rolls, vegetable gyoza, vegetable samosa, vegie croquettes.

C.B.C.A. BOOK WEEK—Curious Creatures and Wild Minds

The last day of Book Week was celebrated with a very colourful Assembly and Parade.

It was lead by our Student Representative who did an amazing job with setting up, music and announcing winners of both our ’Who’s that Author Competition’ and the Children’s Book Council of Australia winning book.

Each of our classes plus the Kindy children from Happy Valley showed their amazing efforts and ideas for costumes and paraded them proudly. With an extra parade of all the ’Wally’s’.

What an exciting , wonderful week !

SAKG Busy Times

Although term 3 is winter, we have been very busy in our SAKG Program!

The year 6 & 7 focused on Sustainability in our School for the first part of the term. Later in the term the year 7’s organised a Scavenger Hunt around the garden and invited Mrs. James’ class to join them. The year 7’s took on the role of guides and engaged the younger students very well.

After a very sensible question from a younger students ‘How do you know which ones are weeds?’, the year 6s took photos of weeds for all the classes to use.

The middle primary classes helped with the general running of the gardens with learning to weed, prune and prepare and improve our garden beds. The last couple of lessons the 4/5 classes have looked at worms. They have looked at them under magnifying glasses and learnt some amazing things about worms!

Mrs. Loveday’s class were very excited this week to see the tomato seedlings they planted a fortnight ago have germinated!

The seedlings we planted 3 months ago were harvested this term and used in our kitchen lessons. Sheena-Margot sourced some amazing recipes to use our produce in some exciting recipes! Dolmades using nasturtium leaves and stuffed nasturtium flowers were yummy as well as nettles tea.

SAPSASA Netball

To end what had been a super busy of SAPSASA Sport, Friday the 31st of July our team of budding Netballers competed in the first round of SAPSASA Netball. Happy Valley Primary School hosted two other schools, Nativity and Aberfoyle Hub. The team with the most wins would move to the next round.

Happy Valley’s first game was against Nativity. The girls came out firing with an outstanding with quarter. There were very few misses at goal, lots of intercepts and incredible team work. The rest of the game was no different, with each player giving it their all. The final score was 53 – 8!! Coach Courtney didn’t want to get too ahead of herself, but our team were incredible!

The second game Happy Valley versed Aberfoyle Hub. We had been able to watch them play against Nativity and get some insight into how they might play. We knew it was going to be a tougher game, and would have to bring the same effort to this game. Well the girls yet again came out giving 110%! We tried different positions for some of the girls and still managed to come away with a big win, 46 – 21! This means that our SAPSASA Netball team move forward to the next round!!

SAPSASA Football

On the 30th of July our Boys SAPSASA Football team competed in the first round robin round for the SAPSASA Football. We had boys from years 5 – 7 representing the team and they all gave it their best shot. We had 3 other schools come to Happy Valley for the first round. Happy Valley versed Hallet Cove in their first game. It was a brilliant hard fought game, and our team came out on top with the win!

The teams second game was against Theile, who had also won their first game. We knew it would be a tough game, with many of their players playing Club Football as well. Our team boys gave it their best shot but unfortunately couldn’t get the win. They should all be very proud of their efforts and how well they represented the school.
